Workplace Para-Counsellor - Foundation Level

Turning Willing Helpers into Skilled Helpers.

A 3-day practical training to equip selected staff with essential helping skills, ethical awareness and practical tools to provide appropriate first-line support within a defined role.

In strategic collaboration with KARE Occupational Health Specialist Clinic

Someone will turn to you. Will you know how to help?

Every workplace has people who notice when something is wrong.

A colleague goes quiet. A team member is overwhelmed. Someone is struggling with stress, conflict, grief, or personal difficulty.

Most people want to help but good intentions are not always enough.

Helping is everybody’s responsibility. Skilled helping is a competency.

What is a Workplace Para-Counsellor?

A Workplace Para-Counsellor is a trained skilled helper who has developed structured helping skills and ethical awareness to provide appropriate first-line psychological and emotional support within a defined scope.

They are not counsellors, psychologists or therapists. The purpose is to extend the reach of support, without extending beyond professional boundaries.

Levels of helping

  1. Level 1

    Wellness Awareness

    Knowing that wellbeing matters.

  2. Level 2

    Willing Helper

    Wanting to support someone.

  3. Level 3

    Skilled Helper

    Having knowledge and helping skills.

  4. Level 4

    Workplace Para-Counsellor

Trained to provide first-line support within a defined scope and facilitate appropriate referral.

The difference is not the willingness to help. The difference is being prepared to help responsibly.

Not every helper is a Para-Counsellor.

The Five Core Capabilities

  • Listen

Build rapport, presence, and psychological safety.

  • Support

    Offer appropriate first-line emotional support.

  • Recognise

Identify signs of distress and concern without diagnosing.

  • Respond

Handle difficult situations safely within role and boundaries.

  • Refer

Know when, where and how to facilitate appropriate professional support.

Not to turn everyone into a counsellor, but to develop more people who know how to help safely.
